Vybz Kartel’s Detention Extended

Vybz Kartel

Popular dancehall deejay Vybz Kartel, who was detained by the police for questioning last week, will be spending even more time in jail, as his order of detention which was for five days, has now been extended by another 30 days. Kartel had been named recently by the St. Catherine South police as a “major person of interest”, and turned himself in several days later. He is reportedly being questioned about criminal gang activity in the Portmore area.

Reports indicate that Kartel’s legal team will be seeking his immediate release at an Emergency Powers Review Tribunal, and that papers are being prepared this weekend in order to secure a hearing at the Tribunal on Monday (July 12). If they are unsuccessful, Kartel will likely remain in jail until late July / early August.

Notably, Vybz Kartel is booked to perform at Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay later this month, and several other events in Jamaica and in the Caribbean over the next few weeks; he will miss all these commitments if the challenge on the detention order fails.
